Extension Cords Can Stretch Safety Too Far

Does your safety awareness extend to extension cords? These electrical devices are so common — and so handy — that we tend to forget they can be involved in fires and electrocutions.

Here are other suggestions for extension cord safety:

• Disconnect an extension cord when it is not in use. The cord will still conduct electricity as long as it is still plugged into the outlet.
• Cover unused outlets on cords so children and pets will not be injured by accidental contact.
• Don’t alter extension cords by cutting off a third prong or filing off a new-style plug blade to fit an old-style outlet.
• If a cord feels hot when in use, throw it away.
• When not in use, extension cords should be identified correctly and stored carefully so they are not damaged.
• Make sure extension cords do not create tripping hazards.

 Don’t use extension cords to make up for inadequate wiring. They should be used only temporarily and they should be used correctly.
