Know When to Cool it in the Heat
What’s the most common symptom of dehydration? Intense thirst? Not always. In fact, dehydration and life-threatening heat illness may develop so quickly that a person doesn’t even experience thirst.
If you perform physically demanding work outdoors during the summer, or in hot conditions indoors at any time of year, it is vital that you drink enough fluid, preferably water, to replace the fluid you are losing to sweating. You may require 16 to 32 ounces (473 to 946 milliliters) of water per hour if you are sweating heavily.
Drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages, or drinking alcohol actually increases dehydration. Since salt is lost through sweat, some people choose to consume sports drinks to replenish it.
