Walk with confidence and, whenever possible, walk with companions. Those two pieces of advice are to help you stay safe from assault as you enter and exit the workplace.

Personal security is an important part of workplace safety. You should stay alert to danger of violence as you travel to and from your job and while you work.

Here are some more tips about personal security:

• Park in a well-lighted area, near the entrance if you can.
• Consider carrying a loud whistle or a personal alarm to discourage anyone who threatens you.
• Do not get into an elevator or a stairwell with a stranger who makes you uncomfortable.
• Stay alert to your surroundings. Watch for suspicious persons. If you feel threatened by anyone — even a fellow worker — get to a safe place.
• Fight fear with a combination of caution and confidence. Be on the lookout for danger, but walk with power and purpose.
