These are steps in a typical lockout program:
- Plan the lockout. Determine what energy sources will be locked out. Determine if locks or other positive blocks can be applied. Plan the sequence to follow. Decide who will apply the locks and tags.
- Ensure all stored energy is safely released or blocked.
- Perform the maintenance or service.
- Perform checks before removing locks and tags and returning the machinery to operation. Make sure all guards are back in place, the work is complete, the tools are put away, workers are positioned safely for startup, and the machine is ready for safe operation.
- Follow the planned sequence of unlocking and returning the machine to service.
