Think of Seatbelt Use From a Vertical Perspective
You wouldn’t think of getting on a wicked rollercoaster ride without being restrained and similarly, you have no choice but to buckle up if you’re flying on an airplane. Why, then, would you consider driving or riding in a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt?
Your vehicle may have airbags, but airbags are designed to be used in conjunction with seatbelts. If you rely on an airbag alone, you are estimated to have only a 12 percent greater chance of surviving a potentially fatal motor vehicle incident than without an airbag.
However, if you are wearing a seatbelt, your chances of surviving a potentially fatal front-end collision are about 45 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
If you are ejected from a vehicle during a crash, you are four times more likely to be killed than occupants who are belted in.
Even if you are fortunate enough to survive, do you want to spend weeks or months recovering in hospital and be buried in medical bills for the rest of your life? Isn’t it easier to just forget the excuses and buckle up, every time?
