Fidgeting at Your Desk Could Prevent Blood Clots
Some people just can’t sit still. From a health standpoint, that restlessness could be helping their health.
Researchers in England and New Zealand have found that workers who sit unmoving at their desks or workstations for hours at a stretch are twice as likely as others to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a potentially fatal blood clot.
Many people are well aware of the possibility of developing a DVT by sitting for hours in an airplane, but the researchers say that sitting at a desk isn’t much different.
DVTs usually form in the deep veins of the lower limbs. If a clot breaks loose and travels to an artery in one of your lungs, it creates a pulmonary embolism, a blockage that can potentially cause death.
