PPE - Fit For Protection
A hardhat with a poorly-adjusted suspension system, safety glasses loose enough to slide down the nose, safety boots so tight they can’t be laced up and gloves so large they won’t stay on. If Personal Protective Equipment doesn’t fit, it doesn’t work properly to protect you.
That is especially true of respirators, which must be fitted exactly so contaminated air does not bypass the filter. Safety goggles also must be fitted for a good seal so contaminants won’t cause injury or irritation to the eyes.
Fortunately, finding properly-fitted PPE is getting easier. Sizes and styles were limited in the past, but now work clothing and safety gear are made to fit both women and men, with a variety of body sizes and shapes. Smaller workers don’t have to make do with baggy coveralls rolled up at the ankles and wrists.
Larger workers can find super-sized footwear. Measuring for safety shoes has become high-tech with vendors providing digital foot imaging for a good fit. Custom-fitted hearing protection is also used for good protection and user comfort.
