Workplace Safety: Minimize Pinchpoint Danger
A pinchpoint, also called a nip, is the name used to describe the small open spaces in moving machinery where you can get your hand, a tool, or a piece of clothing caught. Imagine two rollers moving in opposite directions threading a piece of material into a machine.
Or imagine a conveyor belt transporting a load. Right at the point where the material meets a roller is a pinchpoint.
You’ll find pinchpoints on press rollers, winches, where cable of all types is being wrapped, on drive chains, belts and conveyors, and with continuous flow materials. In more general terms, you’ll find them where cylinders of any kind turn in opposite directions near each other, when one turns near a fixed object or when any material wraps around one.
