Adopt the Buddy System

The buddy system—where people watch out for one another and speak up when they see someone working unsafely—or are there to help when a co-worker gets into trouble–has been around for centuries. Although times have changed, this system remains as valuable as ever in the modern workplace. Here are some examples of how the buddy system can help workers:

• Helps new hires: Newly hired workers, especially people starting out in the workforce, are notorious for not asking questions about safety-related issues. They need to be paired up with an experienced “buddy” who can intervene if new hires appear confused by a process or are seen working unsafely.
• Encourages open communication: In workplaces where the buddy system is encouraged, there tends to be an atmosphere where people aren’t afraid to say something to any worker who appears to be working unsafely.
