Attention Enhances Prevention

No job is so routine it does not have hazards.  Many workplace incidents can be prevented by simply paying attention to what we are doing.

These are some common causes of distraction while working: 

• A poorly designed workplace can create distractions.  Overcrowded work areas and traffic close to your work station can take your attention away from the job at hand.  Difficulty in reaching tools and supplies can take your focus away from your job.  Difficult-to-operate equipment can cause distracting interruptions. 
• Daydreaming is a common cause of distraction.  Make it a point to focus on your work at all times.
• Stress will also take your mind off your job.  Do your best to leave worries behind when you come to work.
• You can be distracted momentarily by a loud noise or other sudden occurrence.  Unfortunately, just a moment is all it takes to put your hand in the path of a moving blade or a metal punch.  It is vital for you to use machine guards and other safety equipment to protect you in a moment of inattention.
• Horseplay can distract you from your work.  If the comic on your crew sneaks up behind you and jabs your ribs, you can easily make a mistake causing injury.  Never condone or encourage horseplay at work.
• Consumption of drugs or alcohol can prevent you from concentrating on your work.  Alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription drugs and even common over the counter remedies can cause dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision and other forms of impairment.  Remember, work and drugs are a dangerous mixture.
• Fatigue can make it difficult to avoid hazards.  Get enough sleep before your shift.
